Overview

The overall level of risk facing the oil & gas industry remains high. Marsh’s National Oil Companies Risk Index score rose from 4.49 out of a possible 6 in 2007 to 4.51 in 2008. By contrast, the Risk Management Effectiveness Index score was just 3.8.

-Marsh Oil and Gas Risk Report: 2008

Despite healthy revenues in recent years, energy companies face a growing number of business risks ranging from uncertain energy and environmental policies, to talent shortages, and supply interruptions. In years past, these risks were often managed independently, but there is a growing recognition of the value to capturing and weighing all risks across the enterprise and understanding the relationships they may have to each other and the combined impact on the business.

-Ernst & Young 2008 global oil and gas industry forecast

“It is no surprise that our survey has found that National Oil Companies are facing a riskier business environment. However, of more concern is the gap between the importance of the risk and how well it is managed.”
