Overview

This workshop will equip participants with the technical knowledge and expertise in Biodiesel feedstock production and plant optimization practices being deployed today. Feedstocks today make up the single most costly expense in the renewable energy equation. The course will cover extensive areas and topics in the field of Biodiesel multi-feedstock production and technology ranging from economics, logistics, policies and finance to remaining competitive thru effective optimization and integration of plant production facilities.

The workshop will enable participants to effectively implement and manage and their own multi modal production facility strategy in credit sensitive times.

Workshop Facilitator Profile

The trainer is the President of a company which he founded over ten years ago for the purpose of developing and commercializing biodiesel production technology. Under his leadership the company has successfully evolved patented biodiesel production techniques for a wide variety of feedstocks. Beginning with laboratory scale demonstrations, it eventually lead to full scale commercial operations in California, Nevada, Colorado, Texas and Australia. The Company recently broke ground on its newest facility located in Detroit, in conjunction with DaimlerChrysler (now Daimler, Chrysler), Bosch, Delphi and NextEnergy. These plants utilize his patented process and have capacities of 3-20 million gallons per year. They produce biodiesel predominantly from recycled fryer oils, but are capable of using a wide variety of other feedstocks, including crude vegetable oils and animal fats. His company is continuing to actively develop improvements to the biodiesel production process in conjunction with the US Navy at the Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center at Naval Base Ventura County in California where a production unit is being used for research and development involving innovative feedstocks and other biobased products. Additional commercial production facilities are under development with capacities in excess of 20 million gallons each.

Jatropha & Algae: The trainer has been working on jatropha as a biodiesel feedstock since 2002 as part of study in India funded by the US Agency for International Development and the US Trade Development Agency. This comprehensive study analyzed the types of jatropha available and the economics of jatropha cultivation, harvesting, and processing. Subsequent jatropha studies, test plots and cooperative research have been undertaken in the US, Mexico, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Ghana, Mali, the Ivory Coast and China. He has has also conducted extensive research and development programs with algae and other aquatic species in both open ponds and photobioreactors, and is in the process of commercializing these technologies in California and China.

Background in the Biodiesel Industry: The trainer has over fourteen years of experience in all aspects of the biodiesel industry. He was the former Vice-Chairman of the National Biodiesel Board (“NBB,” the trade association for the biodiesel industry in the US) and former Chairman of NBB’s Legislative/Regulatory Committee, and is currently vice-chairman of the California Biodiesel Alliance. Prior to founding Biodiesel Industries, he provided biodiesel consulting services to private companies, governments and the National Biodiesel Board, and he continues to provide consulting services to select clients. He has performed biodiesel feasibility studies throughout the US as well as Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Ghana, India, Israel, Malaysia, Mexico, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand, and has conducted biodiesel conferences and workshops internationally.

The Trainer has worked with the US government to develop biodiesel projects in China, India, the Philippines, Mexico and Thailand, and has helped to develop biodiesel standards in many areas of the world. He conducts workshops and speaks professionally at international conferences, and provides independent consulting services.
