Workshop Facilitator Profile

Our veteran trainer has had over 28 years of experience in oil, gas, engineering and construction. Beginning his career in Amoco USA, he has worked for leading companies such as Fluor, Esso, BHP Billiton, Uhde Shedden (of ThyssenKrupp Technologies) and United Group Limited.  He is one of a small group that has worked in both +45 deg C and -45 deg C conditions.

He has worked in the capacities of Plant Engineer, Facilities Engineer and Process Engineer. During his career, he has used process integration for a variety of applications.  He first used the principles in 1984 while working in the central United States, adding a process vapour liquid separator to unload a low temperature heat exchanger network. This reduced the load by 6%, avoiding the need to debottleneck the refrigeration utility service.

He started working on his Masters Degree in Process Integration in 1998, while working on the design of a large offshore gas processing facility in the Timor Sea, offshore Australia.  He used many principles in the design of the facility, ultimately helping the topsides weight reach acceptable targets for transport.

Here is a sample of companies to which he has provided consulting services:

  • BP
  • BHP Billiton
  • Lycopodium
  • Australian Paper
  • Cockburn Cement
  • ConocoPhillips
  • Worley Parsons
  • Shenhua Ningxia Coal Group
  • Alcoa
  • Shell
  • Minara Resources (formally Anaconda)

He has also had long experience in training and development. As part of Fluor Australia, he developed an in-house training program for HAZOP facilitators, enabling Fluor to reap cost savings by not outsourcing HAZOP studies to Esso and Anaconda Nickel. He has also lectured at the University of Melbourne in the field of chemical engineering.

He is currently running his own training and consulting practice and lectures at Monash University. He has conducted numerous courses in a variety of chemical and process engineering, including:

  • Practical Instrumentation for Automation and Process Control
  • HAZOP and Risk Assessment for Profit Generation
  • Practical HAZOPS for Engineers and Technicians
  • Best Practice in Process, Electrical, & Instrumentation Drawings & Documentation
  • Practical Instrumentation for Automation and Process Control
  • Pipeline Systems – Design, Construction, Maintenance, and Asset Management
  • Handling Chemicals and Chemical Processes
  • Fundamentals of Process Plant Layout and Piping Design
  • Practical Control Valve Sizing, Selection and Maintenance

Course Objectives & Key Benefits

  • Learn the fundamentals of process integration
  • Determine the thermal energy pinch within a heat exchanger network
  • Select which streams should be utilized, and how to split streams for maximum heat recovery
  • Determine the optimum temperature requirements for different utilities and services
  • Understand how heating and cooling using stream mixing can be analyzed
  • Identifysoft targets” to be exploited for improvement of total system performance with minimal cost
  • Engage in active discussion with other attendees and the course facilitator based on actual experience

Who Should Attend

This course is targeted at the process industries, particularly in the oil, gas, petrochemical and chemical sectors. In addition, engineering, procurement and construction companies that specialize in constructing, modifying or optimizing process plants would also be able to benefit.

Attendees should have a background in chemical engineering, or be engaged in the following occupations:

Process Engineers | Design Engineers | Process Technologists | Performance Engineers | Project Managers | Engineering Managers | Plant Managers | Facilities Engineers
