About your course facilitator

Trainer 1:

The first trainer is a partner in the law firm based in its London office. She is Head of the International Dispute Avoidance and Resolution Group, where she represents clients across a range of industry sectors (including the energy sector).  She is also a Director of the London Court of International Arbitration, Vice Chair of the Dispute Resolution Committee of the Inter Pacific Bar Association, Treasurer of the London branch of the European Court of International Arbitration and Vice President of the oil and gas section of the Arbitration Club.  She is a member of the Energy Charter Treaty Legal Assistance Task Force.  She is a contributor to various legal journals and has co-authored a chapter on the New York Convention and UNCITRAL Arbitration for Arbitration International.  She is a member of the LCIA, an accredited CEDR mediator and a registered arbitrator with OHADA.  

She has considerable experience in the energy sector (including joint operating agreements, oil field concessions, trading agreements and crude oil sale contracts), commodities (both exploration, production and trading), international trade, joint venture and cross-border disputes; has acted for oil, metal and other commodity traders, oil majors (in both up and downstream disputes), banks and corporations in many multi-million dollar disputes; has conducted arbitrations as lead advocate before a number of institutions, including LCIA, ICC, SCC, UNCITRAL, ICSID and LMAA under a number of different laws, and has also been involved in a number of ad hoc arbitrations in a wide variety of jurisdictions.

She is recognized as a leader in her field by Chambers (“her enthusiasm, dedication and magnificent reputation have been a considerable factor in winning instructions on big ticket arbitrations”, “unusual mix of commercial appreciation, technical ability and personable nature”), Legal 500 (“a rare blend of practicality and technical excellence”), and was recently featured in Global Arbitration Review’s 45 leaders under 45.

Trainer 2:

The second trainer is a partner in the international law firm.  She is co chair of its Energy Services Group, and head of McDermott’s Financial Products, Trading and Derivatives Group. She is also an adjunct professor of law at Northwestern University School of Law.

In 2007, she was named one of the 50 Most Influential Women Lawyers in America by the National Law Journal. She was selected because of her national impact in her field of practice and her “demonstrated power to change the legal landscape, shape public affairs, launch industries, and do big things.”  In 2008 and 2009, she was selected by her peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America.  Corporate Counsel magazine has called Best Lawyers “the most respected referral list of attorneys in practice.”  In June 2007, Lawdragon featured she as one of  the Top 500 Leading Dealmakers, and in September 2007 Lawdragon featured her as one of the 500 Leading Lawyers in America.  She was rated by her peers as one of the Top 50 Female Lawyers (2005, 2009) and a Super Lawyer in Tax (2005 - 2009).  She was recognized as a Leading Corporate Lawyer in Crain’s Chicago Business (2005, 2006) and as one of the Top 100 Leading Women Lawyers in Illinois by the Leading Lawyers Network Magazine (2007, 2008).

She advises energy companies, public utilities, power marketers, and hedge funds.  She assists their businesses in preparing tax hedge and trading policies, risk management procedures, contract negotiation, and guidance for senior management and directors as to their obligations with respect to energy trading and derivatives activities.  She provides advice to her clients as to appropriate legal, regulatory, and tax compliance policies and procedures, and frequently negotiates complicated structured transactions on their behalf.

She has worked to shape legislative and regulatory policy with respect to the taxation and regulation of energy products.  She represented a coalition of energy trading companies in their efforts to shape the tax hedging rules as applied to commodity trading.   She represented the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America in its efforts to conceive and draft legislative language to protect dealers in commodity derivatives from adverse tax consequences.  And she represented the Weather Risk Management Association in drafting comment letters to the CFTC and Treasury Department that addressed the appropriate treatment of weather derivatives activities.

She has taken a leadership role in many professional organizations.  She is a member of the International Bar Association (IBA) Section on Business Law (Committee on Issues and Trading in Securities), the Energy Bar Association (EBA), the Women’s Council on Energy and the Environment (WCEE), the International Association of Financial Engineers (IAFE) and a member of ISDA’s Committee on North American Tax.
