Workshop Overview

NDT is becoming an essential tool in almost all industries. While it is a vital safety tool for aerospace, chemical, oil and gas, and nuclear industries, it is a quality assurance instrument for construction, production and manufacturing industries. Engineers are often faced with NDT methods they may not be familiar with, and sometimes encounter ambiguous indications from such techniques. Some engineers and managers are simply intrigued by these techniques, and other may be considering introducing them in their facilities. In increasingly competitive market,
NDT will become crucial as a tool for assuring high quality productions as well as efficient and safe operations. As NDT, in the form of imaging, dominates medical diagnoses, NDT inevitably will become an integral part of industrial plant health monitoring and troubleshooting systems.

This 3-day highly interactive hands-on training workshop is designed to equip the delegates with unparalleled knowledge as well as techniques in non-destructive testings and evaluations. In general, this workshop will cover not only the major NDT methods, but also the emerging techniques within and across the industries. Our expert will discuss with the delegates about the underlying techniques of NDT, its benefits and limitations, its latest developments and applications of each testing method. With the comprehensive and extensive real-life case studies, our expert will show the delegates the effective and efficient ways to interpret accurate results and formulate right decisions that promise product’s safety and quality with reductions in cost and time.

Workshop Facilitator Profile

The Course Facilitator is presently a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and coordinator (and co-founder) of the Laboratory for Threat-Material Detection at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, Canada. After completing his undergraduate studies and a master’s degree in nuclear engineering at Alexandria University, Egypt, he earned a PhD in nuclear engineering from McMaster University, Canada. Prior to joining the University of New Brunswick in November 1984, he was employed for four years as a Nuclear Design Engineer at Ontario Hydro (currently Ontario Power Generation).

He is leading a research program that focuses on the industrial and medical uses of nuclear and atomic radiation for non-destructive testing and imaging and for the detection of threat materials.  He has published numerous scientific papers and industrial reports, and is a holder of five patents, and the author of three books.  He is a recipient of the Canadian Nuclear Innovation Achievement Award in June 2003, and the Sylvia Fedoruk Award - 2000 of the College of Physicists in Medicine and the Canadian Organization of Medical Physics.

His research work has been funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada, the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Atlantic Innovation Fund, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, the Canadian Border Services Agency, Defence R&D Canada,  and the US Federal Aviation Administration, among others. He has consulted for the International Atomic Energy Agency, SAIC Canada, CBSA Scientific Services Directorate, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, and Siemens Electric Canada, among others. Dr. Hussein taught professional development courses for NB Power,  the Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada (currently Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission), Bombardier, the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick,  Chulalongkorn University and the  University of New Brunswick.

He is a registered professional engineer in the Provinces of Ontario and New Brunswick, and is a member of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing, the America Society of Mechanical Engineers, the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society, the Multidisciplinary International Society for Inverse Problems in Science and Engineering,  and the American Nuclear Society, and  the Canadian Nuclear Society

Key Benefits of attending the workshop

  • UNDERSTAND how common (penetrants, ultrasonic, magnetic flux leakage, eddy current, radiography, thermal imaging), and less-common (acoustic emission, microwaves) nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques work
  • LEARN about the five elements of each NDT technique (source, modification, detection, indication and interpretation)
  • GAIN appreciation of the capabilities and limitations of each NDT technique
  • DETERMINE which technique is most suited for a particular application
  • DISCRIMINATE between false positive and false negative indications
  • BUILD awareness of the benefits of NDT in quality assurance, efficiency improvement, safety and security
  • STUDY some industrial NDT challenges posed by delegates
  • IDENTIFY international standards related to NDT techniques
  • ACQUIRE a set of notes for future reference, including a summary section of how NDT techniques work and their capabilities and limitations

Who Should Attend

This workshop is particularly designed for senior managers, managers, senior engineers, engineers of the following departments:
