Background

Mobile phone usage in Vietnam is big and getting bigger. From pre-teens to over-60s, it seems everyone in Vietnam has a mobile phone, or even two. In fact, mobile phone ownership in Vietnam is far higher than that of developing neighbors: 74 percent of people in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi own a mobile; over half (58 percent) of the urban population and a third (37 percent) in rural areas. That's quite an astonishing figure when compared to China and India, two countries developing at a rapid pace.
Vietnamese consumers are resilient and despite the global economic crisis, they remain relatively positive. Vietnam consumers are ranked the 9th most confident worldwide, according to a recent Global Consumer Confidence study released.

Internet access in Vietnam is again higher than neighbors in China and India. 24 percent of Vietnamese have access to the internet compared to 22 percent in China, according to Nielsen's Mobile Insights report 2008. That equates roughly to 390 million people in China and 20 million in Vietnam. UNI Singapore has assembled a stellar cast of regulators, thought leaders, technology trend setters and business leaders under one roof to chart direction and advance progress in a high growth market.

The Venue

Hanoi is the capital of Socialist Republic of Vietnam. It lies in Red River Delta and is situated in a tropical area having a strong monsoon influence. The name of Ha Noi (Interior side of a river) has been derived from an ancient language which is literally known as a land area located in the inner side of Red River. Ha Noi has nine inner precincts and five suburban districts. It has an estimated population of 6,232,940

IT specialists say that current mobile application production in Vietnam is similar to that of computer software production in the late 1990s and early 2000s. However, made-in-Vietnam mobile applications have been absent except for a few games. Very recently, some for chatting, finding roads, searching information and loading music were launched and have become available. These products indicate that Vietnamese businesses are determined to get engaged in this market. But is there a space for small businesses to get a foothold in this potentially lucrative market?
