Course Facilitator

The course facilitator is the Well Engineering Manager - Asia Pacific for Senergy, an international sub-surface and well engineering consultancy with 400 staff and 14 offices across Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific. Prior to joining Senergy, he held Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) roles including Head of Engineering for Secure Drilling, an advanced MPD service and MPD Manager for Weatherford in Asia Pacific. He believes the advantages of MPD have yet to be fully appreciated outside the US, where a third of all wells are already drilled with enclosed circulating systems, but that MPD will ultimately replace “open to the atmosphere” conventional systems once the full benefits are properly understood.

The course facilitator has a B.Sc. (Hons) majoring in structural mechanics and over 25 years experience as a drilling engineer, drilling supervisor & drilling superintendent, working in Canada, the North Sea and the last 14 years in Asia Pacific. He has worked for Schlumberger, Smedvig, Weatherford, Secure Drilling and Senergy.

Prior to joining Senergy as Well Engineering Manager – Asia Pacific, the course facilitator was Head of Engineering for a young MPD service company with game changing IP capable of delivering wells considered to be “undrillable” using conventional drilling practices. He was responsible for project management and implementation of the technology on Category 1 projects that included new technology applications, new customers and new operating areas with unique technical and operational challenges. He developed the company engineering & drilling procedures, training material, Basis of Design documentation and all related technical procedures. He helped build an enviable company reputation in the MPD field, leading to successful acquisition of the company by a major oilfield Service Company.

Here is a sample of companies for which he has consulted:

  • Anadarko
  • Apache Energy Ltd
  • BG International
  • BHP & Partners
  • BNP Paribas
  • BP UK/Norway/Vietnam
  • Cairn Energy plc
  • Centrica
  • Chevron Texaco
  • Carigali Hess
  • Conoco Phillips
  • Dubai Energy
  • ExxonMobil
  • Gaz de France
  • Kerr McGee
  • Murphy Petroleum Ltd
  • PetroCanada
  • Premier Oil Far East/Indonesia/Vietnam
  • Repsol
  • Shell
  • StatoilHydro
  • Talisman Energy
  • TAQA Bratani

Key benefits for attending this event

  • UNDERSTAND the essential facts of Managed Pressure Drilling
  • LEARN about the different types of Managed Pressure Drilling so as to be able to choose the right method for your planned projects
  • FAMILIARIZE yourself with the equipment, systems and functionality involved with Managed Pressure Drilling, such as rotating control devices or downhole isolation systems
  • BENEFIT from case studies on Floating Rig and Automated Mudcap application of Managed Pressure Drilling
  • LEARN about advanced systems capabilities, such as Mud Pump Efficiency, as well as advanced engineering on Hydraulic Modeling and Wellbore Stability
  • PREPARE yourself for likely contingencies with Event Detection and Identification, thereby controlling potential losses

Why you should attend

The successful application of MPD requires knowledge of the various types of MPD equipment and MPD system capabilities that now exist in the market, together with an understanding of how to apply the appropriate system to best advantage. MPD can be applied to virtually every drilling situation, whether onshore or offshore and on fixed (Jack-up or Platform operation) or floating rigs. Systems with different pressure ratings and functionality are available with different cost impacts and it should be understood which system to apply and how it should be applied to deliver an efficient, cost effective solution.

UNI Strategic ensures that our instructors, learning tools and resources will provide course attendants with up-to-date knowledge for direct application in their professional duties. It will also enable them to extrapolate and extend the provided information to related problems in different industrial situations. By requesting preliminary information about the technical back-ground of our participants, we make sure that the course is taught at the appropriate level – thus maximizing individual benefits. Furthermore, we encourage a comprehensive and fully explorative question and answer teaching style.

Who should attend

| Drilling Engineers | Drilling Supervisors | Drilling Superintendents and all related drilling personnel that have or may have a need to apply MPD to drilling programs that would or could be problematic using conventional drilling practice. Specifically on drilling projects that would include the following issues:

  • HPHT applications
  • Severe Fluid Loss Problems
  • Narrow Margin Drilling
  • Wellbore Stability Issues
  • Kick/Loss Cycles

Personnel should attend who need a better understanding of the complex variety of MPD equipment and systems available and want a better grasp of how to apply the technology, what the costs may be and how to determine the cost/benefit ratio. The knowledge provided by this course will allow engineers to tackle their drilling problems with improved confidence that the technology exists to drill more efficiently and with a reduced risk of significant drilling cost over-runs.
